Juice Fast: Day Five

The Halfway Point.

Today I have officially made it halfway through this ordeal. Naturally, this culminated in a bit of a debacle.

After a breakfast of strawberry/blueberry/kiwi/orange juice, Norris and I took the dogs to the dog park and then decided to go on a bike ride through Hafer park. If you don't know this park, you should go visit it immediately. It is beautiful (particularly in the fall) with smooth, tree-lined trails and well-maintained exercise stations. There is a rock climbing wall, an ampitheater, and several playgrounds. It is also right across the street from a Starbucks. In case you were interested.

We made it about halfway around the trail, up some moderate hills, when I started seeing spots. There was a distinct clenching in my abdomen, and my knees felt incredibly weak. I called ahead to Norris that I was reasonably certain I was going to faint, then pulled over and sat down at the nearest picnic table (of which there are many in this awesome park). I sat down and felt a stabbing pain in my head, right through my right temple. The spots thickened, and I felt dizzy and frightened. Norris went to get the car.

He picked me up on the trail and took me to get frozen yogurt (across the street, next to the Starbucks. Did I mention that this park is awesome?). No, I am technically not supposed to eat things right now. But I needed sugar and potassium. So I had vanilla yogurt with bananas and pineapples on top. And I don't regret it. I immediately started feeling more like myself. No more spots, no more cramps, no more lightheadedness.

What followed was a heated discussion in which I promised to cook every single fruit and veggie in the fridge if Norris would just let me off the hook for this juice fast thing. It's hurting me more than helping me, I reasoned. But Norris stood firm. I would see this through to the end. Five more days, and pounds upon pounds more veggies and fruit.

I am not sure that I am going to start feeling any better, but I would rather suffer through five more days of fasting than disappoint Norris. So, we persevere. On the upside, thanks to the yogurt, I finally went. It was a huge relief. Norris high-fived me afterward. That's how you know someone really loves you.

  1. Try adding protein powder to your juice. Be careful, if you continue to have bad experiences it is very likely that you may avoid these fruits and vegetables in the future. I recommend reading this book.

I Am Afraid of Snakes

I am giving you some valuable information here. Snakes are my biggest fear. My second biggest fear is that upon discovering my biggest fear, people will pounce on it and send me snakes in the mail, or put them in my bed, or my car, or throw them in my face like David Bowie did to Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth . So, the other day, when Norris was getting ready to go on a short trip, we were talking about all the critters in our yard. Normally I like all these critters. We have a bunch of toads (like, seriously, we have like 20 toads in our back yard—and that’s just the ones we can find. The Fungus Among Us

Aren't they pretty?  I love mushrooms. I think they are cute, and pretty, and fascinating. Before all this rain, I even bought a couple ceramic mushrooms to put in the flower bed because they make me think of the forest floor in a fairytale.
